EDIT: well, it's more RPG ish but a bit arcade, depending of which castelvania game you are playing.

:o it is a game series from konami that originated with the arcade game "Haunted Castle" and found its way onto the famicom (aka nes), superfamicom (snes), playstation, dreamcast, sega genis and many other systems. The stories follow the fictional Belmont clan against the evil Dracula...usualy with a whip toting hero (and the occasion heroine.) The most notable charachters are Simon Belmont (CV[NES], CV2:Simons Quest[NES], CV3: Dracula's Curse[NES]...ect) who has the most games under his blet, Death (the grim reaper who is in all but two games), Alucard (the fictional son of the vampired Dracula...he fights against Dracula), and Dracula of course. The games tend to follow a side scrolling formula inside of a castle (usualy with a clock tower, intrance, cave, watery area, inner keep, and a high tower in which Dracula is located) and you are generaly armed with a whip (upgradable) and heart (kind of like a amo in most games) consuming subweapons (generaly used by pressing up and attack at the same time; the usual weapons are: a fast moving but very weak knife, a slow but more powerful arcing axe, a time stopping stopwatch, a very powerful boomerang like cross, and a firebomb like holy watter). The games tend to have a set of progressively harder levels, each ending with a boss creature. Go here http://www.vgmuseum.com/mrp/ to find out more.

I actually played an unfinished ASM Castlevania. The guy who made Wolfenstein 3D worked on it. I think after W3D he totally quit ASM so is sitting on his harddrive.
You could use the whip, walk around, jump and kill bad guys.
