New Contest?

Post by Dwedit »

I say we need a new contest, "rotate that sprite" quickly became a joke.
I propose a tilemap renderer which draws with perspective and rotation, similar to mario kart.
You know your hexadecimal output routine is broken when it displays the character 'G'.

That sounds fun. I wonder if it was possible for someone to take teh F-Zero engine (was it Mode7) decompile it, and then port it to z80.

Definitely a new contest is needed.

I guess my z80 knowledge is to limited to organize a competition with fair rules. So you are free to do so.

The SNES implements Mode 7 in hardware, not software. So disassembling F-Zero wouldn't be very helpful, it would just show what the SNES writes into those registers.

Well f**k, MODE7 is my signature....
I didn't know it was gonna be a contest I wouldn't have released code...
Ah well...Coelurus already did so, makes no difference.

I agree with you on the rotate sprite, we helped each other way to much.

Good idea; sadly, my attempts to proper "mode 7" (as opposed to the faked effects, such as in Pixel Madness) have been buggy and horribly slow... there'd be no competition with something like Jim e's code ;)

0_0 jim e made F-Zero for 68k?

either way, a new contest should be started. But I did like how in the end (really 3) people managed to produce effective code.

Jim e didnt make that 68k game ... and you menat to say 'utterly useless' instead of 'efficient' right? :).

I think that if the comp was going to be mode7 ... we would require a fair bit of time, and you cant expect more than a few entries ... if you're lucky.

I already started this does that mean I can't enter, or is a prizeless competition less strict.

Sorry if this derails the topic a little but would ball race be an example of mode 7. Or maybe a close cousin? The commenting is written in Klingon so I can't tell.

I guess it's a few branches off on the family tree then. It's nice and fast though. Would make a decent mario cart.
