[Staff][Dev] 9-lvl Grayscale

Here you can find side projects of the staff and great projects which we think should get extra support. (Note that featured projects are not projects by staff members of MaxCoderz)

[Staff][Dev] 9-lvl Grayscale

Post by tr1p1ea »

Hi Guys,

Ive been messing around with random stuff (instead of finishing Desolate :S) and have come up with a flickerless 9-lvl grayscale, on the SE calcs at least.

I dont have any plans for it aside from a simple image viewer and some tools to convert BMP's into .8xp files to view on calc.

The viewer makes use of puCrunch and can decompress from either RAM or ROM.

Out of interest here is an image of a wolf in black & white, then 4-lvl, then 9-lvl to see the difference in detail (this img hasnt been touched up or anything, just straight converted down in colours, the lower lvls could be improved with a bit of work):

Will have some test programs out soon, its a pitty wabbitemu doesnt like 9-lvl, it looks near perfect on calc (once tuned):

Wow, that's very impressive (you're keeping busy!) :D

Will it run on non-SE calcs?

I remember when you were first playing around with 8 levels and posted something similar (one of the pics was even a wolf :)). If i remember, some of the lighter and darker levels looked pretty similar and it was hard to tell them apart. Has this improved any? I'd also like a binary so I can throw it on my calc and see how it looks on hardware. :)

This will run on non-SE calcs however the interrupt timing will be different (and require tuning as the batteries discharge i assume).

There are some similarities between the lower level grays at this point, however im am still playing with the dithering pattern to try and even it out.

I will have something for people to test soon, and know that it is orders of magnitude better in quality when compared to the the older 8lvl tests.

Thanks kalan :).

I bought an 83+ off ebay (for $21.50AU delivered :)) and have been messing with the timing on the BE calcs to try and develop a user controlled tuning mechanism of sorts in an attempt to get as close to true flickerless as possible.

SE calcs will take advantage of crystal timers as demonstrated by Jim e and more recently by thepenguin as well.
