GIMP 2.4

Post by kalan_vod »

Well, it has been a few years and a new version of GIMP is here! Looks like it is more user friendly, and many useful features ;)

I always found it a bit.. slow..
Especially when it's loading

So I like Paint.NET (also because I can write my own plugins for it easily, so I can make it do almost anything)

(Disclaimer: this is based on it running on Windows) - the windowing system is basically unusable without some sort of virtual desktop manager, and rather buggy under Windows (tool dialogs popping up behind all other windows, for example). I know it's not really a Windows app, but with such a large market share you'd have thought that there was a Windows-friendly version (ie, put everything inside an MDI container and move the menus to the top and you're pretty much there).

I daresay it's very powerful out of the box, but the interface doesn't do it any favours. I second King Harold's suggestion of Paint.NET as a freebie, as whilst it isn't all that great on its own there are some decent plugins for it and it's very easy to use and extend.

Uhmm, GIMP...slow?

Well Photoshop isn't even usable on my system, and the GIMP 2.2 starts up in 2 seconds, plugins and all.

I have tried using Photoshop, but even when selecting brushes it takes about 4 seconds to register clicks in the GUI. GIMP is lightning fast on my system, so right now I would say GIMP over Photoshop.

I just timed it: one minute, 43 seconds. Photoshop 7 loads in < 10 seconds (this is a Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz, with 2GB RAM).

It seems to be the "Loading fonts (this may take a while)" thing that does it...

It's probably a configuration issue, or I have lots of fonts that it doesn't like loading or something.

Wow I find this really odd.

Can you guys tell me your versions?

Because I have GIMP 2.2 default Win32 binaries from the site, no modifications, and Adobe Photoshop CS3, with no modifications, and it isn't even funny how long it takes Photoshop to startup.

I wish I had a desktop movie taker. :/

Photoshop 7 + The GIMP 2.4 here.

So, yes, using a very old version of Photoshop probably helps.

GIMP 2.2.13 (dutch, no additional stuff), it takes 36 seconds, Paint.NET 3.10 (with lots of extra plugin's) takes about 15 seconds (from the moment I click them in the start menu until they are done loading)
And that on my old computer (new one is delayed again - this time on its harddisk)
I don't have Photoshop though

GIMP takes awhile to load on my comp, but anything adobe takes forever compared to an opensource counterpart.

GIMP 2.2.10 needs 6.8 seconds here (openSUSE 10.1, not-so-good hardware) and I will not try to run Adobe software through Wine or anything ;)
I haven't tested the new GIMP yet.
