Heck, I hate it that windows automatically moves items around on your dekstop...
It doesn't look that bad but note the folders "CleanThisMess" and "Mess2"
The reduced quality is because imageshack allows only 1.5Megs... The PNG version was 1.9Megs

I'd say that the alternative (leaving icons where they are so you can't reach them if you drop your resolution) is worse. In any case, video card driver tools (certainly the ATI Tray Tools) will let you save/restore desktop icon positions.
I'm amazed people keep so much stuff on their desktop.

Appearently not that obvious: http://www.xubuntu.org/files/thunar.png But you're right, of course. The volume thingy and the three textual buttons should have given it away.
Anyway, I'll refrain from posting my own desktop because I've currently got a photograph of my girlfriend as my wallpaper, and I don't want to throw that on the web... sorry

Some people are just a little bit too lazy to fix such things...
Btw, If you drop your resolution (or just change the size of the desktop where the icons are) windows will 'try' to fix their positions. Something it completely fails at.
I use my desktop as my main portal to other locations (because it's easy accesible)

The kirby one is my favourite.
Also, I know I shouldn't be doing this but... I've been browsing trough 4chan.org and I have to say that they've got the most beautiful backgrounds I've ever seen.
Well I finally got around to connecting my second monitor, the result is a rather huge desktop:
(I know I have some useless stuff on my desktop, I'll clean it when I'm not feeling lazy (maybe next year?))
not that this is convenient, dual view is much better than 2048x768 mode
