In restaurants the threshold is about 12, on public transport it's 16, to vote it's 18, and historically and traditionally it's 21 in the UK.
Over here (with our wonderful - ahem - drinking culture) it's the legal age for purchasing alcohol, so turning 18 is merely an excuse for a booze-up. I'm personally all for a contintental-style 16 year old entry point. People seem to be all for raising the legal drinking age, which I reckon would make the situation worse.

I turned 18 last year and to be honest I don't understand the hype about 18 years... (though it's fun not to have to enter a false date of birth in some sites
