Lookup tables are fast when memory access is not a bottleneck. On fast PC's, it's sometimes faster to calculate something than to wait for RAM to give you your lookup table result. Like Andy said, except don't bother with the crossover stuff. Just run a cable from the switch's uplink to an open port in the router, and if your router is configured correctly it should magically work.
