Should the battle system have commands for the user to choose (Attack,Defend, etc.) or should the battle system require players to memorize certain buttons to press for a corresponding command? (Ex: 2nd = Attack)

Phantasy Star Dark Millenia Progress

Post by tokijnct »

I have recently started to look at the battle system for this game and have run into a stumbling block. Since the battle system allows for 3 vs 3 battles (bottom = you / top = enemies), there is limited space for vital statistics to be shown for your characters such as HP and EP.

So, should the battle system have the commands all shown for the player to select,

----------------
>Attack
Defend
Item
Skill/Magic
---------------

Advantage-Easier battle system
Disadvantage-Less Room

Or, should the battle system not show the commands and the player must remember the keys for the commands?

(2nd key pressed)
(Indicated character attacks)
(Alpha key pressed)
(Skills/Magic shown for indicated character)
ETC.

Advantage-More Room / Slightly faster
Disadvantage-Confusing battle system

I think you should keep the command based battle system from PSEE, but maybe you could use icons instead of text to represent attack, magic, item, run, much like Dying Eyes and pop up a menu for magic and items when they are selected...

I think hidden is cool, especially if it is faster. You are not really asking much of a player to remeber a few extra buttons.

I agree with Kevin's Icon idea if you can make recognizable icons 8) .

I will not work on the battle system until the poll expires at the set date as the results seem to be too close to call currently.
In the meantime, I will be trying to fix certain problems I found during my testings.

Nice keep up the good work. :)

btw: I tried the demo at ticalc.org and I couldn't seem to exit the first town, was it supposed to be like that in the demo?

Oh...the demo that I had sent out a long time ago. The version I am working on is entirely different becuase when I released the ASCII version, the lack of comments/bug reports convinced me to tackle the project using a different approach.

@Kevin In the demo(ASCII version = now dropped), to exit the first town, you need to go to a governor's house and enter it. After he talks to you, the guards at the entrance will move away, allowing you to exit the city and start fighting some enemies :) . The demo may be dropped but I have modified certain features from it to put in the graph screen PSDM.

Hmm...it looks like menu based wins. Starts to code...Oh w8 nevermind...Starts to draw Kain, Raem, and Cedric :p. Also, from my currently anticipated size of this project, I will probably need more than ten picture files. Which picture program would any of you recommend? Thanks.

http://omnimaga.earthforge.com/devpic.zip

it allow you 40 pictures

there is also Picture 255, which allow 255 pictures but they corrupt when I group them on my Ti-83+SE so unless you backup every 5 minutes I recommend DevPic.

ZPIC works better than Pic 255, I've neer had any problems with it- it works fine for storing and recalling pics 1-255 (ANOVA doesnt work), even from Flash ROM.

There is a ZSTO prgm on ticalc.org, but last time I tried the source it crashed my calc. Does the new version works on the SE version 1.18?
