Do you Google?

Post by DarkAuron »

I do!

(Quite possibly the most random thing I've done on this forum)

in case anyone has been wondering, I've been feeling very depressed right now. Not that you care. I'm not boring you with this post am I? You're probably having a terrible time reading this. This is so depressing.

No, I do not Google.
AltaVista is a much better search engine - but I might switch over to the new MSN one as it looks very interesting...

reason I wouldn't use MSN search:
a few months ago, I read an article that showed how MSN was filtering their searches to best match their interests. For example, a search for "XFree86" first poped up a warning like "the following matches contain pornographic content, do you want to proceed?" It was assumed that just because there was an "x" in the search, this warning came up, instead of showing matches to the linux display project. But, a search for "Xbox" showed no such warning. After reading that article, and testing it out for myself, I was done.

They've changed that specific example since, but still, things like this make me question Microsoft's motives.

Many people including me feel that Google has alot of power, it controls what people find on the internet. With that you can control how people think, what they know about...control their mind actually. I just hope they don't misuse it.

Seeing that lots of people are asking questions everywhere that could have been answered by typing a keyword and feeling lucky, I don't think search engines in general have really big impact on the masses... You might be in the top 10 hits, if your content doesn't keep people around, it's all in vain. And those who have a bit more experience with the web already know of alternatives like those mentioned so far.

Google is great, and the ads aren;t as annoying as other search engines.
