Well, CoBB, I guess you either use Open Office OR Microsoft Office, which enable you to open the file :)

Isn't the ms office suite "pretty expensive"? There are tools for free to make docs that look just as good (always better when it comes to school-work). I'd never put money on something that can easily be substituted :)

Anyway, to stay on-topic, I changed my desktop a little; new background :p Thinking about switching over to fvwm2 just to be able to do things most wms will do a few years ahead, but it takes some time to set all cfgs.

Any student or faculty at my college (The University of Akron) can get Office 2003 for Windows for $30. You can only get one license per version, though. And I lost my CDs (or at least I don't know where they are), so I'm screwed.

Just use LaTeX or something. OpenOffice/AbiWord are all pretty ropey because they try and do what MS Word can, and fail at that. If they produced their own formats and stuck to them, so be it.

LaTeX is free, can output as PS/DVI/PDF (so easy to read/print) and the files are tiny as it's just source, not a whopping huge Word document.

And most importantly, LaTeX can handle documents of the size of a normal thesis (soon to be a current issue for me) with ease, which is usually too big for WYSIWYG word processors not to choke on. Additionally, one can absorb a bit of typographical erudition while using it, which never hurts.
