The kernel has had calculator link cable drivers for a while now. In fact, they are deprectating them now in favor of userland programs.

I've got 2.6.2, and that doesn't have the cable drivers.

I use Slackware. I was thinking of trying Gentoo but my comps not that fast and i dunno how to configure all that stuff. Whos the other Slacker?

I would assume that you can use any text editor. Linux has like 15 to choose from. Youd need the right compiler and squisher and linker (TiLP) tho. Which would those be tho? zasm for compiling, 'wine devpac8x' for squishing? Any better solutions? Also is there a version of the asm.bat file that can be used for linux? like a bash script or whatever language thatll accomplish that?

btw does anyone know how to setup a wlan in Linux? I have a Linksys WMP54G (RaLink 2500 chipset) i tried to use ndiswrapper and wireless tools but my dmesg output has no wlan0 in it? how do i set that up?

Wine devpac? Are you kidding? It takes just a couple of lines in c. If you have downloaded Acelgoyobis, you can find bincalc.c in the sources dir. Just compile it and there you go.

Yes, all devpac does is slap an appropriate header on your file.

They should be there. I don't remember exactly where they are, but they should be in there somewhere.

Why don't you upgrade to 2.6.9? Maybe it has cable drivers.

Yes Ive seen them too. They have support for the parallel link and silver (USB) link tho.

For wireless support would i need a newer version of a linux distro (which in turn has newer stuff in it) to be able to setup a wireless network?

You shouldn't need a super-duper new kernel for wlan, just do a search on google and you should find lots of info.

Its ok now. I found a little guide on linuxquestions.org. It was even specific to my distro AND wireless card.

Knoppix (the only one I've tried) hates my hardware. No network card, locks into low resolution (1024x768), scratchy sound. Not to mention a ghastly and laggy interface (graphics card problems? Maybe).

Come on, even BeOS plays fair with my hardware!

So, I think I'll stick to Windows for the moment.

I run Gentoo on my server. Without a graphical environment, because that would only slow things down unnecessary. And it has been running perfectly for... 56 days, 20:45 hours at the moment. For desktop work I prefer Windows though.

And Ben; Gentoo recognized all my hardware as soon as I put the CD in. Except for my LAN card, I had to supply it with the proper driver, and that was it.

That's not really fair... what would you expect from a distro running off a live cd? Knoppix isn't intended as a permanent OS.

Whahahaahahahaahahaa... it's impossible... Linux hates wireless networking... (for me and my friends at least) :'(
