Okay I typed one up, BUt just to make sure I fully understood the rules. It doesn't have to rotate 180 degrees, does it?

The first thing I noticed is the 8 bytes wasted on SMC. When a routine is so short, duplication is cheaper size-wise. Besides, I've never used jp (ix) before, so this was a good opportunity.

Doesn't decreasing L cause the sprite to mirror?
