[Featured][Dev] Game Boy Emulator

Here you can find side projects of the staff and great projects which we think should get extra support. (Note that featured projects are not projects by staff members of MaxCoderz)

[Featured][Dev] Game Boy Emulator

Post by calc84maniac »

Indeed, I have been making a Game Boy emulator for the TI-83+SE, TI-84+, and TI-84+SE.

It currently supports two zoom levels, and another is planned as well. When zoomed in, you can configure the camera to follow any sprite (most often you will want this to be your character).
It also supports two out of the four Game Boy sound channels, so you can plug in your headphones and enjoy. :D
Only two games are known to work at the moment: Tetris and Link's Awakening. Tetris runs at almost full speed, while Link's Awakening is more at about half speed (but still very playable!)

I uploaded a Youtube video of Link's Awakening for your enjoyment. Beware, the video and sound aren't fully synchronized.

Next on the list for compatibility is the special rendering techniques which are employed by many games.

Wow. Very impressive. I wonder whether sound does have a impact on the speed however. Would it run faster if you wouldn't emulate the sound?

Well, the sound is interrupt-based, and seems to have very little impact on the speed. However, you can turn it on or off, so... ;)

What about this: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fi ... 36950.html? I just wish it was more developed. But it works extremely well!

For the 83+ series, that is pretty impressive, calc84maniac! Good work!

lol. I know they are different calculator series! I'm just commenting on how much more the 89 has to offer than the 83+. Nevertheless, calc84maniac is doing a stupendous job!

I also think that whoever started the 89 version should continue it. The conversions of the Game Boy games are extremely close to the real thing, except for the size of the screen (the 89 is shorter in height than a Game Boy). Another job well done.

One more note. When I said "For the 83+ series, that is pretty impressive, calc84maniac! Good work!" I was meaning calc84maniac is doing a great job for only using the 83+, as opposed to an 89.
