So, after seeing Benryves' really cool thing with the sound and stuff, I decided that I want to play around with a microcontroller or two, do you guys have any suggestions for where to start?

To find out what is available for each chip generally, take a look in the getting started manual. BASIC commands shows availability of each BASIC command - and hence feature - for each chip too.
