Virus

Post by DarkAuron »

Last weekend a virus, probably attained through a random spam email that I deleted in Thunderbird, infected all 1,848 exe files on both of my harddrives and crippled windows to dust. It spread through my SD and CF cards as well, wrecking my DS and GBA saves, and corrupted a lot of random files through all of my drives. I backed up what I could but I lost a lot of things.

The virus's name is Gaelicum.A, and I pray no one that I know gets it. From what I've read it also creates a hidden firewall of its own and is often undetectable until it's too late, and blocks off any connections to the internet you try to make. Needless to say the past week and a half has been rough, restoring my computer and all.

Wow, that's rough. Did you have any antivirus software running?

Well, hopefully I will be okay behind a NAT router, WinOs firewall and a virus scanner...... .hopefully.

Ouch.

How did the virus get onto your PC in the first place? (Or are you using POP?)

Sounds bad, sorry man.

On the other hand; A back-up a day (or week), keeps the disaster away.

Or IMAP, of course, so you don't even have to download the email in the first place. ;)

IMAP isn't the least bit remote... It's the only thing my uni offers for students (other than webmail).
