How obscenely dedicated am I?

Post by chickendude »

Yesterday I was fired from work because I was constantly on this site. When they told me, I ran back to my desk and closed down the couple threads on here that I had open, packed up my things, and left. Man, I love you guys!

All of my friends, that work in jobs with computers have contracts that they signed, and in said contracts most of them mention "non busness related sites, including, but not excluded to; Pornography, Video Games, Non-Work Related Programming, And/Or Entertainment" i.e MaxCozers ;)

Hah, yea. Well I had already put in my two weeks notice, as I'm going off to college in a couple weeks. They just decided they couldn't wait an extra week.

Wow, I'm always on this site at work(like right now), but my job is a bit more lenient. It's more of a "come in when you want, play video games with other employees for half the time, surf the web, and get something work-related done if you have time" kind of job. Well, that's what actually happens anyway. We had a great multiplayer game of Battlefield 2 going yesterday, and I even won some money off of it.

I'm so lucky.

That sounds like a fun job. What company is it, and what do you do there?

I'm working at the State University of New York at Buffalo. More specifically, the Toshiba Stroke Research center. It's a huge school(like 50,000 people total, 30,000 students), and there's a lot of research done. There's a supercomputer. Also, the system that the US postal service uses right now to have a machine read handwritten zip codes on mail was developed here. There is a ton of cutting edge stuff being done, and a lot of cushy jobs. :D I'm going to be starting there as a freshman this fall for computer engineering. Also, they have a robot wars club. They have a robot wars arena and everything. the robots look like they could be on the show.
As for the job, I do c++ programming, and build interfaces with the VTK open source 3d modeling libraries. Well, some of the time. There's usually someone running some type of multiplayer game, with an option to bet on it. From bowling, to pool, Age of Mythology, Battlefield, Counter Strike, Age of Empires 3...

I have completely flexable hours. I can work whenever I want, and take off whenever I want. I just count whatever hours I work and at the end of the month, put them on a spreasheet form, and the check comes in the mail soon afterwards.

The company is really cutting edge. They've developed software that allows doctors to model bloodflow and pressure in aneurisms, model a stint going down a blood vessel, and model a blood vessel in 3d using only 2 x-rays. Current technology requires far more x-rays to get the same 3d view.

I've gotta be honest, if you were honestly on the site that much it's understandable that you were fired. If I owned a business, I wouldn't want to be paying my employees to be posting on Maxcoderz!

On the other hand, everyone needs some relaxation time. If they only caught you like once or twice that's no problem. However, the way you describe it, you were on constantly.

Just my two cents. All in all I'm sorry you lost your job, good luck finding a new one!

Ehh..my productivity rates were still the highest for my section. Either way, it was a blessing. I haven't had any time this summer to do anything. It's nice to have at least a week to myself to do whatever before embarking on yet another school year. But I really have no complaints, I broke their honor code thing so as per the papers I signed I was fired.

:)
